, bob king in michigan. >> thank you to josh. coming up, we are going to go back live to newtown, connecticut, for the latest on the school shooting and president obama's visit later today. >>> welcome back. i'm melissa harris-perry. this hour, we have a lot to get to including the housing rebound headlines you have been seeing as well as the renewal for the against women act. first, we want to make sure you have the latest information on newtown. president obama will visit the shaken community today. we go to chris jansing who has been in newtown since the news broke on friday. what is the latest? >> reporter: good morning to you. we are learning more about the shooter who was described by people who knew him well as a loner. we know now, for the first time that he went to sandy hook elementary school, where, of course, he opened fire killing 20 students and six adults. when he walked down the hall, he would grasp his computer, walk along the walls and rarely interacted with anyone. this is a day to remember the victims and president obama will be here later today at 7:00 easter

on the shooting in newtown, connecticut and expressing frustration to refuse at least one of his nominations. i don't mean last month. we are talking november of 2010. perhaps it's a sign of fights to come. on this issue, the president has another choice. gun control advocate michael bloomberg urged him to make a head of the atf. it's the power this president is reluctant to use. so, the idea being that the president could play something. this was nominated in 2010. he's serving as an interim. is it possible for the president to flex his executive authority and recess a point? >> here is maybe what he does. he floats out somebody he wants and win la pi pierre. float those two name sos people are like really? whoever that person is, it's a shoe in. >> that's how we end up with him. >> winstead public polling. >> exactly. >> it's a good idea. i'll go to you on this raul. there's more urgency. people don't pay attention to the atf, but they might now. republicans might be more reluctant to block or filibuster. is it possible through a regular order, maybe republicans on this issue?

once again in the wake of the newtown school shootings. he's called on 300 armed volunteers to hang outside schools. it's in line with what the nra said they hope will happen nationwide. if hearing the word posse conjures up the images of the old wild west. consider this, some districts want to see armed teachers in every school, as well. chairman of the utah shooting sport council just helped train some 200 teachers in handling concealed weapons and joins me live now from salt lake city. clark, good to see you, sir. >> thank you very much. good to be her. >> the idea of arming teachers, the head of the american teachers federation calls the idea, quote, irresponsible and dangerous. how do you make sure that an amateur gun user like most teachers would be, that they're able to handle guns safely in any circumstance? >> make no mistake, we're not talking about these folks doing tactical things inside a school against the shooter. we're encouraging them to institute the normal lockdown procedure which falls short when the shooter comes and crosses that threshold of a classroom. it doe

course, the newtown school shooting has drawn a lot of attention to gun control laws in this country as lawmakers and lobbyists debate solutions and some are taking actions themselves. the big idea today, gun buybacks. in new haven, connecticut, towns offering cash or gift cards for anyone handling a gun. and a city an hour from newtown, connecticut, a buyback program happening right now is no-doubt personal. joining me live now on the telephone is bridgeport mayor bill finch. mayor, good to have you. we have you on the phone because the skype connection wouldn't have been great. >> it's good to be here. we worked so hard, but the technology doesn't always work with you. >> is the gun buyback program drawing a big response? >>s yes, we raised over $100,000 in food coupons from the local grocer and we've had over 300 guns sold back to the city, spent a little over 30,000 in -- you know, i think people are happy to do it. we're only 20 miles from the school and it hit everybody pretty hard. >> gun buyers seem to be back out there getting those guns ever since newtown, talk of new gun l
